Description

George III, 1760-1820. Silver Medal 1783, commemorating the relief of Gibraltar. Bust right wearing a cocked hat and uniform / View of the bombardment of Gibraltar. 34,23g. BHM 254; Eimer 802. PCGS MS62. (56420667). Good extremely fine. Provenance: Hess 262 (1-2 February 1993), 179. The siege of Gibraltar was a major Franco-Spanish campaign to wrest control of Gibraltar from Britain during the American Revolutionary War. Lasting from 1779 to 1783, it was the largest military engagement of the conflict in terms of the number of troops involved. The siege was finally lifted on 7 February 1783, ending in a decisive British victory. This medal commemorates a victory of immense importance to Britain, which strengthened its position in the subsequent peace negotiations. The British were thus able to secure the strategically vital Rock of Gibraltar in the Treaty of Paris.
