Rare. Splendid.
The Siege of Douai took place from 22 April to 25 June 1710 during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The Allies, led by the Prince of Orange and Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau, successfully captured the city despite strong French resistance. The French army under Marshal Villars attempted to relieve Douai, leading to an indecisive four-day confrontation with the Allied forces led by Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy. After capturing Douai, the Allies continued their campaign by besieging Béthune. Through its rich iconography, this medal depicts Queen Anne triumphing over and humiliating Louis XIV: a powerful political message in 18th-century Europe.
