Under the leadership of Prince-Abbot Martin II Gerbert, St. Blasien experienced a true golden age. Martin II Gerbet founded the Rothaus brewery, which is still in operation today, had the remains of eleven early Habsburgs transferred to St. Blasien, and established the abbey as an important centre of historical research. Above all, he commissioned the magnificent abbey church of St. Blasien, built in the Classical style and inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Its imposing dome reaches a height of 62 metres, making it, at the time, the third-largest domed church in Europe. It is this remarkable building that is depicted on this charming medal, whose dies were engraved by Anton Guillémard, who served as chief engraver at the Milan Mint from 1777 to 1796.
