Description
Salzburg
Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709.
20 Ducats 1687, Salzburg. Coat of arms surmounted by the archiepiscopal hat / Saint Rupert and Saint Virgil facing each other and holding long crosiers. 69,58g. Fr. 820; Probszt 1744a; Zöttl 2092.
Very rare. Good extremely fine.
By modesty or tradition, many coins of Salzbourg do not feature a portrait of the archbishop, but only his coat of arms. Instead of the expected portrait, we find the depiction of Salzburg's two patron saints, St. Rupert and St. Virgil.
Rupert was of high nobility, perhaps even of royal descent. In 696, he received the remains of a ruined ancient city, Juvavum, from the Duke of Bavaria. He built a church there, as well as several monasteries. He also developed the salt mines, which led to a change in the town's name to Salzburg.
