Salzburg was the seat of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, a prince-bishopric of the Holy Roman Empire. The independence from
Bavaria, secured in the late 14th century, led to an increase in wealth and prosperity, culminating in the late 16th to 18th centuries.
Archbishop Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi is well known for his great building program. It is less known that he was also greatly interested in coinage. The gold multiples presented to high dignitaries were a good medium to represent him as a generous art supporter. In 1565, the building of a new mint located at the "Alte Kirchgasse bei der Pfarr" began. The new building contained also an apartment for the mint master.
