The reverse of this denarius features a remarkable depiction of the temple dedicated to Mars Ultor, Mars the Avenger, on the Forum of Augustus. Its construction was not completed until 2 BC. Since this magnificent denarius was struck in 18 BC, the building cannot represent the completed temple, but rather a symbolic and idealized rendering inspired by the characteristic architecture of Roman temples.
