Augustus’ greatest political challenge in his later years was to secure a dynastic succession capable of preserving the new imperial system he had created. Yet one by one, his intended heirs died, leaving him with increasingly limited options. Ultimately, he turned to Tiberius, despite their difficult relationship, and gradually entrusted him with increasingly important responsibilities, particularly in the military sphere. Tiberius’ victories notably resulted in several triumphs at Rome, including one in October 12 CE. The following year, the renewal of his tribunician power and imperium proconsulare maius formally marked him as Augustus’ designated successor. This magnificent aureus echoes Tiberius’ victories and likely captures the moment of one of his triumphs, while simultaneously projecting throughout the Empire the image of a powerful and legitimate heir, ensuring the continuity of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
