Unlike most other Greek cities, Lampsakos had access to its own gold mines, enabling it to produce gold coinage on a comparatively large scale. In 1924, Agnes Baldwin Brett identified 41 stater issues struck over a period of no more than sixty years in the 4th century BC. The number of these issues reflects the city’s vigorous economic activity up to the arrival of Alexander the Great — prosperity largely owed to its strategic position as a harbor at the eastern entrance of the Hellespont.
