Demetrius Poliorketes, nicknamed the “Besieger of Cities,” probably had this coin struck to commemorate the naval victory at Salamis in 306 BC. He defeated the navy of Ptolemy I. Specialists have generally considered that the obverse type of this coin, depicting Nike standing on the prow of a ship, echoes the famous statue now known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Benndorf even used this coin type to help date the statue.
Traditionally, Poseidon was believed to determine the outcome of naval battles. His presence on the reverse is therefore particularly appropriate to the theme of the coin.
