Alexander’s distater coinage provides a lasting testament to the extraordinary quantities of precious metal seized during his campaigns in the Persian Empire. Alexander is said to have taken possession of some 180,000 talents of gold and silver, amounting to several hundred tons of precious metal. The scale of this booty was unprecedented in the ancient world and would not be matched on a comparable scale until the discovery and exploitation of the riches of the Americas. The exceptional weight of the distater made it particularly well suited to large-scale payments, especially for rewarding veteran soldiers after long periods of service. This distater therefore stands as a tangible witness to the sudden influx of wealth that swept through the Greek world following the fall of Darius III.
