Engraved by the talented Euainetos, this dekadrachm inspired numerous die engravers in other cities, but few were able to match its quality. The portrait of the nymph Arethusa represents the pinnacle of the Greek ideal of beauty, as well as a powerful symbol of freedom. Arethusa was, according to legend, pursued by Alpheus, who had fallen madly in love with her. With the help of dolphins, she managed to escape and, when she reached the island of Ortygia, opposite Syracuse, she sought the help of Artemis. Artemis transformed her into a spring, which thereafter became a symbol of the city.
