Phalanthos was a legendary Greek hero traditionally regarded as the founder of Taras in southern Italy. According to ancient tradition, he was a Spartan leader who guided a group of settlers, the Partheniai, to southern Italy. The Oracle of Delphi designated the location where Phalanthos was to establish the new city, making the foundation of Taras the fulfilment of Apollo’s divine will. This tradition gave the city a prestigious lineage, linking it directly to Sparta, one of the most renowned cities of the Greek world.
