Very few Roman emperors could be considered paragons of virtue, but even fewer seem to have excelled in crime and debauchery to the extent that Victorinus allegedly did—at least according to the Historia Augusta. Yet Victorinus had loyally served for several years under a remarkable man, Postumus, the emperor of the Gallic Empire. Having unexpectedly ascended to the throne following the death of Laelianus, Victorinus wasted no time in harassing the women around him. Eventually, however, a jealous husband put an end to his reign—and in doing so, made Victorinus’s gold coinage among the rarest of the Roman imperial series.
