Hieronymos was an ill-fated and inept ruler who was assassinated barely a year into his reign. His death also meant the end of the entire royal family: "After the death of Hieronymos, the Syracusans, having met in assembly, voted to punish the whole family of the tyrant and to put them all to death, men and women alike, in order to uproot completely the tyrant stock" (Diod. 26.15.2). No more kings were needed anyway, as the Roman Republic soon took control of the once mighty realm.
