Description

Mainz, Archdiocese Henry III of Virneburg, 1328-1346 Goldgulden, J. (1346/1353), Eltville. FLORI-ELTEV Florentine Lilie / S.IOHA-NNES.B Standing Johannes Baptista, sign helmet. ==References== Walther -; F. -; ==References== Pick; ==References== Pick II -; Felke 2. 3.51 g.; Extremely rare Very nice Tiny margin error Mostly the earliest Mainz gold gulden Gerlach of Nassau are assigned. For Felke's assignment to Heinrich, the following facts and assumptions speak: Henry III was at the same time a provost in Cologne alongside his office as archbishop. He was deposed in 1346 by Pope Clement VI in Mainz and replaced by the papal candidate Gerlach von Nassau. However, Heinrich did not give up his claims without a fight, but instead appointed the later Cologne Archbishop Kuno von Falkenstein as regents and defended the archdiocese tenaciously. This connection with Cologne prompted Alfred Noss, in 1913, in his work on the coins of the archbishops of Cologne 1306-1547, to deal with this gold gulden in the description of the coins Archbishop Walram of Jülich. He writes: "Since Heinrich was still a prop in Bonn and also the rightful owner of violence in Mainz, one will probably be allowed to consider Heinrich and not Kuno as the mint master of the Eltville guilder. Heinrich had the stamps cut in Bonn, by the same artist who was employed by Walram, which is why both guilders look so similar. Since the pot helmet is attached to both, it must be the badge of the stamp cutter. There is also an Eltville guilder with the badge h, which is casually dissolved in Henricus." (p. 49). This gold gulden (Felke 1) is located in the Stadtarchiv Mainz. Felke, in his citation on p. XIV, believes that the stamps cut for Eltville in Bonn were not used until Eltvilla.
