The campaign led by Vespasian and Titus in Judaea was a costly and difficult affair. The Romans lost tens of thousands and, according to chronicler Josephus, the Jewish dead numbered in the millions, with most of those victims having succumbed to famine or pestilence. The war was so difficult that its conclusion was celebrated with triumphal processions, games, the erection of a triumphal arch and the minting of extensive series of coins. The majority of these coins date to 70–71 AD, following the Roman victory in which the spoils of Judaea were paraded through the streets of Rome. They were struck from the immediate aftermath of the war in 69 AD to the reign of Titus.
There are two different variations of this historically significant kind. In the more popular form, the standing Jewish prisoner faces ahead and looks to the right, while Judaea is seated to the right under the palm tree. However, in the less common version shown above, the figures are inverted, and the prisoner looks back at the grieving Judaea by turning his head over his shoulder. With a particularly powerful and emotive face of Titus and both reverse figures—Judaea and the captive—rendered with remarkable clarity and detail, the design is still distinct and captivating despite natural wear.
