Description

Alexius II. Emperor of Trebizond, 1297-1330. AR Asper (22mm, 2.29 g, 8h). St. Eugenius, holding cruciform scepter, on horseback right; three floral ornaments below horse / Alexius, holding jeweled scepter, on horseback right; manus Dei to upper right. Retowski – S. Bendall, An Introduction to the Coinage of the Empire of Trebizond 51 (same rev. die as illustrated example); SB 2619. Toned, minor deposits. Good VF. Very rare with the manus Dei. Bendall knew of only three in his 2015 publication. Bendall suggests that coins from this very rare emission with the manus Dei were struck first before the much more prevalent and common examples without the manus Dei. Coins from this early emission remain very rare.
