This coin from the city of Astyra (Mysia), bearing the head of Tissaphernes, is of particular significance as one of the earliest known representations of a named living individual on a Greek coin. Below the head, the legend ΤΙΣΣΑ can be read. Tissaphernes, a prominent Persian satrap of Lydia and commander of the Persian forces in Asia Minor, played an important role in Achaemenid politics and in the course of the Peloponnesian War. His conflicts with the Spartan king Agesilaus contributed to his fall from favour and his execution in 395 BC.
