Locri Opuntii - Statere (ca. 350 BC) D: Persephone's head on the right - R: Ayace with Corinthian helmet standing to the right holds a shield and a sword - gr. 12.21 - Very rare - SPL (SNG Lockett n. 1693 - same coins; BMC see 28-29) (Ag) Ex Leu 20, Zurich 25-26.04.1978, n. 85 ('Variante von grosser Seltenheit. Hohes Relief) - Persephone's representation closely recalls that of the Syrian Decadrams of Eveneto. In fact, it is believed that the first coins of Opuntii were prepared in Syracuse to bear witness again to the comminglings between the two worlds. This coin is of particular importance precisely because of its style that gives us all the precision and care of the engraving in the Greek coinage.
