Description
POTTERY. Iranian Plateau Cultures. 3,000-2,000 BCE. (14 cm tall x 12 cm diameter). Medium-sized vessel with an oval body rising from a tapered foot, marked by a ridged separation between body and neck. The neck is large and wide, flaring sharply into a trumpeted form with a simple tapered lip. Painted bichromatically in dark red and black with two horses and a large bird to the right, accompanied by plant motifs and geometric fillers across the remaining surface. A refined late Early Bronze Age highland vessel whose animal triad—paired horses and a prominent bird—reflects evolving iconographic tendencies that parallel later Indus decorative conventions, executed here with an unusually controlled and confident hand. . The piece has overall crisp, well-preserved decoration with notably fine brushwork. Minor chips and paint loss, otherwise intact.
From the St. Croix Collection.
