Description

Johann Kalmsteiner 1845-1897 Marble sculpture of a Kore White marble Height with pedestal: 200 cm Signed and dated “Vienna 1894” on the pedestal Fingers on both hands professionally restored Johann Kalmsteiner was an Austrian sculptor of the Vienna Ringstrasse era, whose work bridges the gap between academic classicism and late 19th-century historicism. After training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he initially collaborated with prominent masters such as Carl Kundmann and Edmund von Hellmer before developing his own artistic style. Kalmsteiner preferred marble and alabaster and devoted himself in particular to idealized female figures, allegories, and mythological figures. His works are characterized by extraordinary technical precision, a sure sense of proportion, and a finely tuned balance between idealized austerity and sensual vitality. Since antiquity, the Kore-the depiction of a young, clothed woman-has embodied notions of feminine grace, purity, and ritual dignity. In 6th-century B.C. Greek art, she served as a votive offering or funerary figure and could represent goddesses, priestesses, or noble young women. Her posture, symmetrical composition, and characteristic, enigmatic smile lent the Kore a timeless aura. In the wake of a renewed interest in antiquity, this type of figure regained popularity in 19th-century European art. Artists such as Kalmsteiner drew upon it to combine the classical ideal of beauty with the aesthetic sensibilities of their time. The marble figure of a Kore presented here-signed on the base and dated Vienna 1894-is a prime example of this fusion of antiquity and modernity. During the late Ringstrasse period, Vienna was characterized by a preference for ancient themes and technically virtuosic execution. Kalmsteiner’s work fits into this context, yet at the same time displays subtle traits of individualization and an almost painterly treatment of the surface, as is characteristic of the fin de siècle. The figure depicts a young woman standing upright in a richly draped peplos, a typical ancient garment. The fabric is artfully puffed out at the arms and hips, while in other places it falls in soft, form-fitting folds. This effect, reminiscent of the so-called “wet style,” allows the contours of the body to emerge gently from beneath the garment. Her feet, clad in sandals, peek out from beneath the long robe. Her right leg, slightly brought forward, is clearly outlined beneath the fabric and lends the figure a sense of dynamism. The outer garment is draped over the right crook of the arm, forming a masterfully executed, deeply sculpted fold there. The left hand points slightly to the side-possibly an indication of an original pairing or flanking arrangement, such as next to an entrance, where the figure might have shown the way to those entering. Beneath the left arm, the fabric falls in rich, deep folds down to the knee. Noteworthy is Kalmsteiner’s subtle adaptation of the ancient type: over the peplos, the young woman appears to be wearing a form-fitting bodice or corset. This element, reminiscent of the fashion of the 1890s, makes the figure appear both classical and contemporary. A braided ribbon encircles her head, beneath which long, carefully rendered curls cascade down. The idealized face, with its gentle smile and gaze turned slightly to the right, lends the composition a subtle asymmetry and vitality. The Kore occupies an important place within Johann Kalmsteiner’s oeuvre: it illustrates his masterful command of marble and his ability to translate ancient forms into the visual language of his time. Compared to his allegorical or religious figures, this work is less narrative in nature and appears instead as a tribute to pure form and the ideal of beauty itself. It combines academic perfection and technical virtuosity with that quiet, refined melancholy that characterizes numerous works of Viennese art around 1900.
