The private seller offers for sale this 1972 ZIL 131, powered by a 5.97-litre V8 petrol engine, paired with a manual transmission. This rugged six-wheel-drive truck is finished in olive green and fitted with a canvas tilt over the cargo bed, just as it would have been used in service.
The ZIL 131 was developed in the 1960s by the Likhachev plant in Moscow as the successor to the ZIL 157 and entered production in 1966. It became one of the most widely used military trucks of the Soviet Union and its allies, valued for its simplicity, its ability to cross very difficult terrain and its capacity to carry several tonnes of cargo or a full platoon of soldiers. Production continued in various forms for decades and large numbers were also used by civilian operators such as fire services and forestry companies.
The 6×6 drivetrain with large off-road tyres, high ground clearance and a front bumper with a recovery chain give this truck the typical look of a vehicle built for expeditions and harsh conditions. The cab is straightforward and functional, with a large steering wheel, a clearly laid-out dashboard with analogue gauges and a simple bench-style seat. At the rear the large cargo bed has a wooden floor and folding benches along the sides under the tilt. Machines of this type are becoming increasingly popular with collectors of military vehicles and with adventurers looking for an unusual expedition base.
