Oil on canvas, doubled, 63 x 154 cm counterpart to Lot 13 Poseidon, Roman Neptune, was one of the 12 Olympic gods of ancient Greece. He was the God of the sea and brother of Zeus. Poseidon was also the god of the Oracle of Delphi before Apollo became part of these tasks. Poseidon is often depicted in a large chariot drawn by hippocamps. The trident in his hand is accompanied by sea nymphs. Also subjects with dolphins as migratory animals are known from art history.
