Oil on canvas, doubled, 63 x 154 cm counterpart to Lot 12 Galateia, the "milk white" is a nymph from Greek mythology. The young man in whose arms Galateia stands could be Akis. Galateia loved the shepherd boy, but her husband killed the young Akis out of jealousy. The myth of Akis and Galateia has often been taken up in art; in ancient painting, designs of the subject are not only documented, but also handed down. For example, in a Pompeian mural from the house of the priest Amandus, on which Polyphem sits on a hill, while a dolphin carries off Galateia, using her veil as a sail. The theme has also been interpreted in many ways in modern visual art. In our present work they see a very intimate scene of the love couple in love, riding on a dolphin and accompanied by nymphs.
