"First Carl Graefe realized that in no part of the medical history the value of tested formulas must be regarded as high as in ophthalmology... not even mentioned by A. Hirsch; and yet it is the first book of its kind in the world literature" (Hirschberg § 486 II). C. F. von Graefe (1787-1840) was appointed to the newly founded University in Berlin in 1810, "his real creative power was developed in ophthalmology and surgical surgery" (Hirsch-Hübotter II, 818). The folding board is an incunabula of lithography from Berlin and shows an apparatus that Graefe used for "gas and ethereal steam baths" of the eyes. August Wilhelm Andreae (1794-1867) took part in the wars against Napoleon after his studies in Berlin and later went to Vienna to "stud under Beer and Jäger ophthalmology. After completing his studies, he settled as a doctor in Magdeburg in 1817, where he gave lectures on general pathology and therapy at the then still existing surgical teaching institute (probably their stamp) and with particular success on ophthalmology."
