Hoffmann (1760-1826) was professor and director of the botanical garden in Göttingen since 1792 and went to Moscow in 1804. The "famous botanist... has acquired great merit for the botanical garden in Moscow" (Hirsch-Hübotter III, p. 261; but false life data). "A work on the genera of the dolden plants was the most important yield of his years in Moscow." (Arndt: Göttinger Scholar I, pp. 70). In this work he describes Cicuta, Pimpinella, Selinum, Tragium, Caucus, Turgenia, Pastinaca, Zosima, Coriandrum, Angelica, Archangelica, Rumia, Aegopodium, Myrrhis, Wylia and Bifora. The "Erörterungen über Schirmpflanzen" are Hoffmann's response to the review of the first edition of the Leipziger Literatur-Zeitung No. 285 of 1815.
