Horn-Schenkling 6085 and 6088. – Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) was a German entomologist, botanist, pathologist and mineralogist. The present work belongs to one of his best-known works "Die Schmetterlinge in Bilder nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen" which first appeared in the years 1777-1839. The boards show up to four different butterflies, partly with their caterpillars and dolls. One panels are additionally illustrated with plant representations, in order to indicate the metamorphosis and habitat of the butterflies. – Pretitles drawn up on Japan, titles missing for the most part.
