Horn-Schenkling 21554. – The rare and sought-after work on cicadas and bugs in a broad-edge, completely uncircumcised specimen with the text in Dutch and French. The author, Caspar Stoll (1725-1791), a German entomologist and butterfly collector from Hesse-Kassel, created here a main work on insects, which previously had little focus - and thus made the book a reference work that was to be valid for many decades and drew its knowledge from the generation of entomologists. The remarkably accurately observed, fine-lined and equally realistically coloured plates were engraved by the Dutch painter and eraser Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811), they are among the highlights of the entomological book illustrations. The literature rightly refers to the excellent reproductions of the "very valuable illustrations" (Nissen II, 136). The first part deals with the cicadas (with 29 plates), the second with the bugs ( with 41 plates). For both parts a imaginative stinged title with lovely flower border was created (here both in the table part). – Splendidly bound specimen in very beautiful half leather ribbons, all panels with their original silk shirt made of thin paper.
