See Plesch 789. – First edition of the famous monograph on citrus fruits by the Nuremberg botanist, merchant, manufacturer and publisher Johann Christoph Volkamer (1644-1720) - one of the most beautiful copper engraving works of the Baroque period. The second part of the main work, published in 1708, is available. In addition to some allegorical representations, the magnificent copper tablets show mainly citrus fruits and various rare plants, mostly in combination with very beautiful garden, castle and city views from Italy. "Due to the brass trade and the possession of a silk factory in Rovereto, which his grandfather had already founded, Volkamer was able to devote himself entirely to his inclinations and botanic-scientific studies due to the high income. These applied primarily to his garden in Gostenhof, without which his comprehensive work on the Hesperides would not have been conceivable. Under his guidance, he reached the highest bloom. Through acquisitions from 1693 to 1702, he managed to expand the site almost twice its previous size. This made the garden one of the largest in the city. Volkamer could still enjoy his splendor and fame in his lifetime" (Hamann in the epilogue to the facsimile edition of the Hesperides, p. 11). – The first 15 sheets (including titles and 3 vignettes), the frontispiece and 2 copper plates are missing. Some of the leaves at the beginning as well as the folded and double-leaf plates with water stains, deposits (sheet e4 with strong text loss), insertions and cracks as well further traces of usage, the tables with the fruit representations however mostly with few brown spots beautifully preserved.
