See Matschoss p. 34 and Poggendorff I, Sp. 327. – The volume contains the first print of the first essay from Buchanan's three-volume, important main work "Practical Essays on Millworks and other Machinery" (London 1814; second edition revised by Thomas Tredgold 1823; third revised by George Rennie 1841). It contains the following chapters: 1. Of the Principles of the Configuration of the Teeth of Wheels. 2. Of the Application of the Principles of the Configuration of the Teeth of Wheels. 3. Supplementary Observations. It follows Appendix A: "A Practical Inquiry respecting the Strength and Durability of Teeth of Wheels used in Millwork" and AppendIX No. II: "On the Use of Charts, and some further Explanations ..." (this is missing in many copies and also in copies digitized by Google, among others, which depict only 164 pp.). R. Buchanan (1770-1816) was active as a civil engineer in Glasgow and had concentrated mainly on the construction of water mills.
