Volume I summarizes his work on bridge construction and on more general mathematical questions, including a reworked version of the "Principes of Bridges" (p. 1-114), first published in 1772, the first English bridge building theory. Subsequently essays on the construction of the London Bridge as well as a "History and Practice of Iron Bridges" (p. 144-166), which lasts until 1805.
