Translated after the English edition "A practical treatise on locomotive engines upon railways" (London 1836), which in turn was based on the original French edition of 1835. After the works of Thomas Tredgold and Nicholas Wood (both in 1825), this had been the first extensive and meaningful work on the theory and practice of steam locomotives. In particular, it was Françoise Pambours (1795-1878)'s credit to carry out the theoretical intrusion of the subject, which he deepened in his 1837 "Théorie de la machine à vapeur". In this work he deals, among other things, with the tension of the vapours in the steam engines, the theory of the movement of the steam wagons, the various secondary parts of the machines together with their effects, as well as the behaviour of the locomotives on the rails. Pambour was an artillery officer until 1828 and later an engineer. In 1839 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Whether Crelle has also been the translator of this treatise is not clear from the preface, but is probably because he has dealt with problems of the railway system in numerous essays. – Slightly tanned, stamped title.
