Very early example of the construction of a lift bridge for rail traffic over the Elbe between Altona and Harburg. The large central opening should span 388 feet (about 120 m), a width that is only overbidden by a few modern lifting bridges. The Hamburg Kattwyckbrücke is the largest lifting bridge in Germany with a width of 96 metres. Roeper describes in part 1 his "System of a movable bridge", part II (p. 11-34) includes the "Description of the Harburg-Altona Project" (the 2 panels), the third part contains a "short calculation of the dimensions of the bridge railway". The engineer Oscar Roeper (1844-1896), who mostly worked in Hamburg, studied in Karlsruhe and Hanover, then went to the office of Westphalen in Hamburg and then worked in Lübeck until the summer of 1868. Since 1876 he has been Head of Engineering in the City Department of the Hamburg Building Deputation. In this function he built numerous bridges and locks in the city.
