Cox I, 297, First French edition. The original edition was published in 1766-67 (Vol. I and II; a third volume appeared only in 1771 and was probably no longer translated). Holwell (1711-78) first worked as a surgeon after his arrival in Bengal, later in the administration, where he even became governor of Bengal for a short time. Holwell became known for his book on events in the Black Hole of Calcutta in 1756. For a long time, Holwell's only report was considered an authentic testimony; later it turned out that Holwell had greatly changed the facts to the detriment of the Indian participants. On the one hand, this work offers a history of Bengal, his people and their world of faith, and on the other hand, it is the first study by a European of the Bengalic Antiquities (some shown on the 5 tablets in Volume 2). Holwell had learned Hindi, but did not have Sanskrit knowledge, so for later researchers some errors regarding Indian mythology remained to be corrected. The cards in Bd. I show, among other things, the run of the Jumna river with the towns and towns on it. – Smallly browned and spotted, pp. 145-160 as well as tables in the lower corner water-edge.
