Wilhelm von Kalckheim had lost his leg as a colonel in Hessian service and then retired to studies for four years. The re-entry into the military service and the Battle of Lutter am Barenberge (1626) gave him one and a half years of imperial captivity and thus time to produce this translation and to write an extensive apparatus of note (p. 349-486). At the end there was still time for four short discourses (about fear of God, causes of war and exercises as well as about weapons and rifles). The impressive copper title shows an architectural frame with globe over crossed sword and lance, on the sides stand Sallust and his translator (with wooden legs and chained) opposite each other (see Faber du Faur 177, the Kalckheim a Sancho Pansa face (and figure) certified). – Slightly tanned and slightly flaky. Title below with a narrow border section and with stamp of Joachimsthal's Gymnasium.
