Kosch VII, 299. – First edition of this book on the music aesthetics of the Viennese music critic (according to Verdi "il Bismarck della critica musicale"), who did not particularly appreciate Richard Wagner and for this he was missed an immortal personification by him as a marker in the "Meistersingern". The narrow book is a stroke of genius by young Hanslick. It was heavily debated, the Vienna University even accepted it as a habilitation thesis, and so the doctorate lawyer and journalist became the first professor of musicology at Vienna University.
