Retraining workshops for settlers and emigrants. - Photo documentation with about 390 vintage photographs, with photo corners loosely mounted in 3 papalbs of the same name (1932-1939). Extensive private documentation material in word and image about today's little-known historical training centre called "Retraining workshops for settlers and emigrants" (U.S.A.). Founded in 1932 in Bitterfeld-Gräfenhainichen by the engineer Wilhelm Quack (1876-1955) and supported by the IG Farben, the aim was to prepare German young people and young families for successful settlement in the former German colony in East Africa through practical training in crafts and agriculture. The rather short-lived project was discontinued during the Second World War. The wealth of private photos document in all the details both the training in the various institutions in Gräfenhainichen (Breitewitzer Mühle), the as adventurous to valid journey of the graduates by bicycle to Italy with subsequent steamer ride to Egypt and further journey to Dar es Salaam in today's Tanzania, finally the artisanal and agricultural Activities in rural settlements and farms, partly with the participation of the local population. Of particular interest are the partly extensive explanations to the photos, in which numerous U.S. graduates are mentioned, and the activities on the farms and in the "mission areas" are described, e.g. coffee and tobacco cultivation, house and stable construction, furniture construction, well construction, grain harvesting, installation boats, "oil market in Cameroon" etc. Namely mentions are made among other places like Mbozi ("Neu Mannheim"), Neu-Langenburg, Ngogollo, Mufindi, Iringa, Malangali and Dar es Salaam. The collection, probably compiled from various photographic estates of the graduates, begins in the founding year 1932 (with the portrait of Quack as Frontispiz) and ends with the Reichskolonialtagung 1939 in Vienna, on which the Nazis tried again, shortly before the outbreak of the war, to consolidate their alleged claim to the former colonial territories.
