NDB I, 502. – First edition of his romantic dissertation, with which he received his doctorate in 1839. The dissertation on Roman legal history is dedicated to the philologist, jurist and librarian Agathon Wunderlich and the dean of the Faculty of Law Johannes Schnell, who was highly honored by Bachofen. Bachofen, later famous for his "mother's law", studied law and antiquities in Göttingen and Berlin, became professor of Roman law in Basel in 1841, where he was a volunteer judge at the criminal court and later at the appeal court in criminal matters.
