Carter-Muir 224. The German edition is not published by Blake and Wellcome. – The only German edition of "The state of the prisons in England and Wales" (Warrington, 1777). On the basis of his own experiences in a French prison in Brest, Howard (1726-1790) advocated an improvement in the prison system in England after his release. In this book, which caused a great stir at the time, he exposed the inhumane conditions in English prisons and thereby brought about changes in the law that led to improvements. Köster (1754-1802; Advokat in Celle, later law firm secretary in Hanover) has edited the work for German readers. The copper shows floor plans, including the prison of Ghent. – Printed exlibris "W.
