Together with his somewhat younger opponent Vulteyus, Vigelius is the most important representative of the systematic direction of humanist law in Germany. In contrast to Donellus, whose multi-volume systematic commentary puts the system idea at the service of dogmatic deepening, the systematization at Vigelius is an instrument of teaching reform. His two systematic main works, the "Methodus iuris civilis universi" (Basel 1561, most recently Frankfurt 1628) and "Digestorum Iuris Civilis libri quinquaginta" (basel 1568/71), are therefore, in modern terminology, nothing more than an introduction to civil law. The first edition of the "Dialectices iuris libri tres" is also part of the genre of instructional literature. It deals with the thought steps of legal reasoning.
