"Drawing down the Roman and German regent history in the form of a poetry-manieristic masquerade. The starting point of the event is a gathering of all 128 Roman and German emperors from Julius Caesar to the reigning Leopold, who have gathered on a bucolic aue. ... Each emperor has his own individual appearance, which is subject to a uniform scheme. Each emperor has been assigned a mask by lot, which symbolizes a mostly low, often unusual profession. Taking up this 'titul' in metaphorical or allegorical manner, a 'madrigal' in 15 verses constructs a concetto that alludes to an important historical event of his reign, to his glory or shame, to the virtues or vices of his character. ... Then Fama proclaims in four verses the historical judgment, in four concluding verses Pallas (Athene) draws a moral doctrine according to the kind of fabula docet. ... Walter had apparently hoped for a scenic performance of his play at a princely court, but the princes were apparently little pleased to see their ancestors presented as fassbinders, pigherds and morgue bitters.
