Description

Watt, James. Copy machine. Mahogany box with brass plaque "J.G." on the lid as well as brass fittings and handles and with iron key. 44.5 x 29 x 13.5 cm. Around 1820. One of the first portable "copying devices" from the workshop of James Watt (1736-1819). Watt invented the machine out of the need to have copies of his own letters and blueprints with him on his many journeys. The described original was moistened and pressed together with Japanese paper. Through pressure and time, a mirrored copy was created, which could be read using the thin sheet. In addition to the portable travel variant, James Watts also invented a stationary model. In addition to the inventor, personalities such as Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington also use the Watt copy press. – With smaller to larger traces of use, completely preserved and functional. Rare.
