ASIATICA Amitabha Sutra. Chinese jade book. 10 panels made of dark green, jade-like stone substance (nephrite or serpentine), framed in grey, floral-named brocade frames. 22 x 14 cm. Brocade binding with wooden lids and blade-embossed lid title (sinice): "The Buddha speaks the Amitabha Sutra". China, late Qing time around 1900. Religious devotional object with text by Amitabha Sutra, a central text of Mahayana Buddhism. Inscriptions in regular script (Kaishu) and seal script (Zhuanshu). The golden signs are engraved in the stone surface. Interior title with decorative frame of two dragons and cloud motifs, also in gold. The last panel shows the depiction of a Buddhist deity, probably Manjushri on a lotus throne, surrounded by a gloriole. Production probably in the context of Buddhist workshops for cultic and representative purposes. – Slight traces of use due to age. Single abrasion of the gilding; Brocade partially rubbed, minimally frayed at the edges. Overall well preserved.
