Episode of 40 color woodcuts after Chinese paintings, mostly after Qi Baishi (1864-1957), next to Shen Zhou and other masters; 35 large-format leaves (approx. 31.5 x 43 cm), 5 narrow formats (approx 35.5 x 16 cm). Especially floral motifs, insects and small animals are presented, with Shen Zhou additionally landscapes. Qi Baishi is one of the four most important painters of Chinese modernism (alongside Zhang Daqian, Wu Changshi, Xu Beihong) and has often been given his own poems for his reduced, ink-painting depictions of birds, insects, flowers and small animals. In addition, some Chinese text sheets with characters are added to the collection, including translations of poems by poet Li Bai (701-762). The present collection was owned (according to the supplier) by Bauhaus artist Marianne Brandt and probably dates back to her stay in China from October 1953 to March 1954. During this trip, she was responsible for the conception and design of the official exhibition Deutsche Angewandte Kunst der DDR in Beijing and Shanghai. The small collection may have been brought as a personal souvenir of this stay. – Overall well preserved.
