China, Shanghai, wooden workshop of the Jesuit orphanage Tushanwan, 20. ==References== 32-part ensemble of small miniature figures on Chinese everyday life from the last production phase of the wooden workshop of the Jesuit orphanage Tushanwan in Shanghai. ==References== In the 19th century, models were made for export as well as for international trade exhibitions, which combined scenes of everyday life with motifs that met the European taste, occasionally also served prejudices of European recipients. Various architectural models (pagodes) were also produced in the same workshops. The present mixed lot combines depictions from transport and agriculture - rickshaw, unicycle carts, carrying racks, goblin with ox, farmer with water buffalo -, craft scenes such as weaver at the loom, spinning wheel, scribe as well as wool and cotton processing, moreover motives of fishing and shipping with cormorant fisherman and sailing and dragon boats, along with architectural and everyday scenes like an honorary portal (Pailou), board player and children. Compared to earlier products of the workshop, the figures are smaller, the faces are only schematically designed. The mobility of the models is particularly remarkable: almost all wheels are rotatable, seesaws are movable, and the agricultural equipment also has working mechanical elements. Single components have also been worked loosely. According to the supplier, the present collection originates from the possession of Bauhaus artist Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) and is believed to have been acquired as a personal souvenir. Brandt stayed in China from October 1953 to March 1954, where she curated and co-designed the official exhibition Deutsche Angewandte Kunst der DDR in Beijing and Shanghai. Larger holdings can be found internationally in the Hearst Museum (UC Berkeley), Burke Museum (Seattle) and Brooklyn Children's Museum as well as in the MARKK (Hamburg).
