From 1784 to 1786, Villoison accompanied Choiseul-Gouffier on his famous expedition to Greece and the Levant, including the monastery libraries of Mount Athos, where he tried to find missing manuscripts, unsuccessfully. After his return, Villoison published in 1788 the codex Vebetus A of the Iliad Homers, which he discovered during a study stay between 1781 and 1784 at the Bibliotheca Marciana in Venice, thus creating an edition philological sensation in the world of altophilology.
