Pierre Le Roy (1717–1785 in Vitry-sur-Seine) was one of the most important[1] French watchmakers and inventors. Together with Ferdinand Berthoud, Le Roy was a leader in the development of chronometer inhibitions. He created a temperature compensation through a bimetal balance with adjustable mass screws and the isochronal balance spiral. His developments provided the basis for today's mechanical chronometers. Le Roy was born in Paris as the son of Julien Le Roy (1686–1759), who was the Hofahrmacher of Louis XV. After his death, Pierre Le Roy took on this task. Jewelry watches such as the spindle watch here, made of gold, enamelled and filled with precious gemstones, were mostly unique commissioned work of well-wrapped customers such as nobles and royal houses all over the world.
