Neck clock: significant, unique pair of gold/emalle neck watches, Blois 1640/1650
Lot 4294
Sold

Description

1. Approx. Ø33mm, approx. 34g, gold, high-quality, probably 20K, case completely enamelled, top and bottom with elaborate, very detailed mythological scenes, the back of the shell shows "THE ORIGIN OF PARIS" and on the lid is the "ALLEGORY OF JUSTITIA". The casing edge shows four cartouches with landscape images. The templates are engravings by Michel Dorigny , the pictures are probably from Simon Vouet (1590-1649). The black edge is only known from three housings made of Blois, high-fine, early spindlework with vase pillars, 2-armed balance without spiral, board signed Laurier Blois , enamel dial, gold pointer, outstanding preservation condition, in the edge area minimal cracked. Francois Laurier was recorded around 1650 in Blois and died in 1663. Blois enamel clocks from around 1650 with works from this time are museum objects. Many of these enclosures, which were already valued as works of art at that time, have works from the 18th century. ==References== This watch is an original from Blois at 1640/50, a museum collector's object. Comparable watches: 1. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/xqG), 2. ( https:// www.cortrie.de-go/N9J), 3. (httpS://www,corterie.de.go/Xl1). 2. Case with absolutely identical dimensions and in absolutely identical construction, about Ø33mm, about 34g, gold, high-caliber, probably 20K, case completely enamelled, top and bottom with elaborate, very detailed mythological scenes, the shell inside shows an idealized landscape with a farmhouse and an angler in the river, the lid inside a river landscape with Trees and a village in the promontory. The back of the bowl shows "Ceres, Bacchus and Venus observed at the harvest of lynx" and on the lid the scene "Ceres, Bakchus, and Venus celebrate violently". The casing edge shows four cartouches with landscape images. The templates are engravings by Michel Dorigny , the pictures are probably from Simon Vouet (1590-1649), early spindlework with vase pillars, 2-armed balance without spiral, platinum signed Francois Berger Paris, enamel dial, iron pointer, outstanding condition of preservation. NOTE: According to our knowledge this is the only known pair of Blois enamel watches that is known. Also special is that both watches still have their original works from the time and the 3. Aspect of the greatest rarity is the size of the watches, which differs significantly from the usual size of known enamel watches from Blois!
