Neck clock: Museale, large Renaissance neck clock with stackfreed, percussion and sundial, southern German around 1580
Lot 4311
Sold

Description

Approx. 90 × 60mm, approx. 251g, gold plated brass, whole housing is worked through. In the ground is the oval bell. The case back shows a mythological scene: under a canopy stands Argonaut Jason with the Golden Fleece, surrounded by typical Renaissance tendril and two greyhounds. The lid is decorated with floral and figurative motifs: below you can see two trombone-blown angels, above each monkey, then follow dolphins in the style of the Renaissance, the conclusion is an angel who spreads out his arms. At the centre is another small lid, also broken worked, attached (cover later replaced), open one sees a horizontal sundial with compass (compass no longer original), on the lid a thread is attached as shadow thrower. The compass has a silver leaf with an engraved eight-part wind rose. The early work is a spindle with alarm clock without snail(div. restorations). The stackfreed is used to balance the spring force. The florally designed spindle clamp made of gold-plated brass is fixed with a pinning. The 2-spinch iron turret (without spiral spring) is limited in movement by a regulating lever with two pig bristles. The gold-plated brass dial has two hour scales for I to XII and 1 to 24 o'clock. The border is engraved with deer and winged fantasies as well as floral motifs. The rotatable silver alarm panel is mounted in the centre. The pointer is made of iron. With the enclosed sundial it was possible to regulate the mechanical wheel clock and to correct it again in the corresponding conditions. The watch is sensationally rare and comes from an important German collection. Only a few comparable pieces are known, which have already received enthusiast prices at auctions: e.g. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Dd1).
