Description

of a young lady, oil on canvas with a plaque "Miss Selby", unframed, 70 by 56cm. Notes: Miss Selby (1817-1873) Mary Anne Selby wife of Sir Charles 8th Bt. Much of Mary Anne's married life was spent in France, only returning when her husband inherited the estate. Mother to five boys (the eldest and youngest died in childhood-one died from scarlet fever and one from whooping cough), once her husband died from a heart attack in 1854, she had to bring up the boys alone, with much hardship as after her eldest son was made a Ward of Chancery, they were not allowed to remain at the hall (which was let out) and their lives took a nomadic turn. Mary Anne took them to Paris, Switzerland and Italy, staying with friends and relatives. They eventually returned to Wolseley when her son Sir Charles the 9th Bt came of age. Mary Anne died in a convent in Kensington Square on 18-1-1873 aged 56 and is buried with her husband in Rugeley. Condition: Overall craquelure, some blistering. Category: Art/Paintings Estimate: 200-300 GBP
